Řetěz KFC je známý nejen jako kuřecí fastfood, proslavil se také svými bizarními vychytávkami. Svým fanouškům nabídl antiinternetový stan a dron, postavený z krabic od kuřecích křidélek i jídlo z falešného kuřecího masa. Nyní se spojil s ruskou společností 3D Bioprinting Solutions na 3D tisku svých kuřecích nuget.
Je to kuře a není to kuře Vytištěné kuřecí nugety budou podobné pouze vzhledem, texturou a chutí těm z kuřecího masa. Pravá bude také křupavá strouhanka a směs koření, ve které budou tyto vytištěné nugety obaleny. Maso má být vytvořeno ze zvířecích buněk, rozmnožených v roztoku a z přidaných rostlinných látek, jejichž podíl má být 60%. 3D biotiskárna je podobná běžným 3D biotiskárnám, pouze místo tenkého vlákna roztaveného termoplastu vypouštějí bio-ink. Jedná se o sloučeninu vhodného biopolymeru, například kolagenu, který plní funkci nosné látky, lepidla i samotného biologického materiálu. Tímto materiálem mohou být například buňky. Následně vzniká synteticky vytvořená tkáň. Touto syntetickou tkání mají být i kuřecí nugety od KFC. Živočišný materiál k výrobě kuřecích nuget bude získáván z plodů březích samic kura domácího. Metody získávání tohoto živočišného materiálu by vegetariány rozhodně nepotěšily. KFC proto chytře uvádí, že se výroba nuget obejde téměř bez zabíjení kuřat. Maso bez masa nejen v KFC KFC není jediná značka, která hodlá servírovat hostům nepravé maso. Některé společnosti, například Beyond Meat a Memphis Meat jdou ještě dál a nabízejí svým návštěvníkům „maso“, vyrobené zcela z rostlinných buněk.
